How a Ruaha walking safari works
A walking safari in Ruaha is a guided activity. It is offered next to game drives. You walk with a guide and follow the instructions you are given. Booking is done in advance through an authorised operator, and walking on your own is not part of the offer.
On foot you leave the vehicle and see the park at walking pace. As with a drive, a sighting of any particular animal is never promised, and a walk is not a way to get closer to wildlife. Your guide sets the route and the pace.

The rules on a walk
These come from the park's visitor rules. Your guide gives the details on the day.
Stay on the route you are given
Keep to the designated paths and to the line your guide sets. Do not wander off to get a better view.
Do not feed or disturb animals
Feeding wildlife is not allowed, and neither is disturbing it.
Leave the vehicle only where permitted
You may get out of the vehicle only at approved places.
Follow the guide and ranger
Their instructions come first, every time.
Night drives and drones are different again: both need a special permit, so do not expect them as part of a standard walk. Take drinking water and insect protection on every outing. In the rains, tracks can turn muddy and rivers can rise, which can change what is possible.
Walking fees
Rates from the 2022/23 tariff. Amounts may have changed, so ask for the current rate.
| Item | Non-East African adult | East African citizen |
|---|---|---|
| Short walk, 1 to 4 hours | $20 | TZS 5,000 |
| Long walk, over 4 hours | $25 | TZS 10,000 |
| Child rate, short / long walk | $10 / $15 | TZS 2,500 / 5,000 |
| Guide, per group per day | $20 | TZS 5,000 |
| Night drive (special guidelines) | $50 adult, $25 child | TZS 10,000 adult, TZS 5,000 child |
The park fee for the day comes on top, and so does your operator's price. The child rate in the tariff is not a rule on who may join a walk, so ask the operator about age limits. Check the current amount before booking, and ask whether the walking fee is already part of the quote. For the daily park fee, see the page on Ruaha park fees.
A good way to book is to ask the operator to name the walking fee, the guide fee and the park fee as separate lines, each with a date.
Planning a Ruaha walking safari
Fit it into the right stay.
Because a walk needs a licensed operator and advance arrangement, it works best as part of a multi-night stay rather than a drive-by add-on. Fly-camps need prior arrangement too. The page on Ruaha tours explains how to reach the park, and the safari guide covers the game drives that most stays combine with a walk.
In the dry season the sand river seeps and the remaining pools matter for wildlife, and the Great Ruaha River page explains the water. The route of a given walk depends on your operator.
Booking and paying
What to expect at the gate and from your operator.
Park fees can be paid by Visa or Mastercard at the gate, by mobile money, or online through the government payment system. Operators can pay by bank transfer. Which of these applies depends on how you book, and a package often covers the park fee for you. Ask who pays what, and ask for the receipt.
If you want the resident or East African rate, you need proof of status: a residence or work permit for the resident rate, and a passport or ID for East African citizens. Holiday status alone does not qualify you for a resident rate. Education groups can apply in advance for a group reduction.

No. This is an independent guide, not run by Tanzania National Parks or by any operator, airline or lodge.
