Ruaha Tours and Combined Safaris

Ruaha tours come in three shapes: a fly-in to an airstrip, a road trip via Iringa, or a combination with other southern parks. Here is how they compare and what to ask each operator.

  • โ˜… Hand-picked, top-rated safaris
  • ๐Ÿฆ Lions, fees and flights explained
  • โ†บ Free cancellation on most bookings

Three ways to tour Ruaha

Ruaha tours differ mostly in how you get to the park. Scheduled and charter flights serve the airstrips at Msembe and Jongomero. The road route runs from Iringa through Tungamalenga. A combined tour joins Ruaha to another southern park or to the cultural sites around Iringa.

A flight connection is not the same as a finished tour package. Whether an offer includes the flight, the transfers, the park fees and the guide is for you to check line by line. Walking safaris and fly-camps must be arranged ahead through a licensed operator.

Our picks: Ruaha tours

The four-day trip from the Morogoro region puts transport, lodging and park fees in one price. The camping safari swaps lodge nights for tents, and the Zanzibar trip includes the flights. The two combined safaris add Mikumi and, in the eight-day version, Nyerere and Mafia Island.

Hand-picked tours, booked through GetYourGuide and Viator. Prices are indicative starting prices in US dollars (as of October 2026). Tap a tour for live availability and the current price in your currency.

Fly-in, road or combined

A comparison of the three shapes. Times and fares are examples, not a quote for your date.

TypeHow it worksExampleGood to know
Fly-inScheduled flight to an airstrip, then a transfer to camp and game drivesDar es Salaam to Ruaha 08:30โ€“11:00 via Selous; Zanzibar to Ruaha 07:50โ€“11:00Daily, minimum two seats from Dar es Salaam; 15 kg standard luggage, 30 kg XL on confirmation
Fly-in from ArushaScheduled flight from the northArusha to Ruaha 08:15โ€“11:30Not a guaranteed nonstop; confirm the day and the stops
Road trip4x4 from Iringa via TungamalengaRoughly 2 to 3.5 hours, depending on the trackA 4x4 is recommended, especially in rain
Combined safariRuaha plus Nyerere, or Ruaha plus Iringa sightsRuaha to Selous 11:45โ€“13:05, 1 h 20 minName the landing strip in the plan

For most visitors with limited time, a fly-in is the simpler route because it removes the long road day. With more time, the road trip through Iringa lets you see the town and the stone age site at Isimila on the way. Both can be built into the same itinerary.

Flights and fares

Flight times and fares for 2026.

A sample fare from Dar es Salaam to Ruaha is $433 for an adult and $346 for a child, with $39 in charges on top. The child rate applies to ages 2 to 12, and children under 2 fly free. The current schedule runs through May 2027. Times shown are whole-route times, including a stop, and they are not nonstop flight times, so ask what the stops are on your day.

Departure times can differ by a few minutes, for example 07:50 or 08:00 from Zanzibar. Always confirm the exact time before you plan an arrival day around it.

Ruaha and Selous safari

The usual combination in the south.

A daily flight links Ruaha with Selous in 1 hour 20 minutes. Ask which landing strip you land on and how it connects to your camp in Nyerere National Park, and have it in your plan. Nyerere is a separate national park with its own fees. The page on the southern circuit covers the route, and Nyerere and Mikumi are only touched on here.

Around Iringa, the stone age site at Isimila and the museum at Kalenga are used as cultural stops on Ruaha itineraries. The Iringa guide explains them. Opening hours and entry fees change, so confirm both with the operator.

What to ask before you book

The wording differs more than the prices do.

What is included

Ask whether the flight, the airstrip transfer, park fees, a vehicle with guide and meals are in the price. Park fees follow a tariff that you should check for the current amount; the page on Ruaha park fees lists the rates.

Which airstrip

Msembe and Jongomero are the park's airstrips. They lie in different parts of the park, so the choice shapes your transfer and your drives.

Walking and fly-camps

Both need prior arrangement through a licensed operator. See the page on the walking safari for the rules.

Luggage

Standard luggage is 15 kg on the scheduled flights, with an XL option up to 30 kg once confirmed.

More tours in Tanzania

The northern parks have their own guides.

For the classic northern circuit, look at the Serengeti safaris or at the Tarangire tours. Each site covers its own park.

Ruaha tours: frequently asked questions

Is it better to fly or drive to Ruaha?

That depends on your time. Flying saves a long road day, while driving through Iringa lets you see the town. Both reach the park, and many itineraries combine them.

Which airstrips serve Ruaha?

Msembe and Jongomero are the park's airstrips. Which one you use depends on where your camp lies.

Can I combine Ruaha with Selous?

Yes. A scheduled flight links the two in about 1 hour 20 minutes. Check which landing strip your plan uses, because Selous in a flight schedule does not tell you the exact park.

Do I need to book walking safaris in advance?

Yes. Walking safaris and fly-camps must be arranged beforehand through a licensed operator. The park offers walks only with a guide.

Is this the official Ruaha website?

No. This is an independent guide, not run by Tanzania National Parks or by any tour operator, airline or lodge.
