How a Ruaha safari works
Ruaha National Park lies in southern central Tanzania and covers 20,226 square kilometres. Most visitors see it from a 4x4 on game drives. Guided walking safaris are the other main activity, and they have to be arranged in advance through a licensed operator.
A Ruaha safari is a different trip from the northern circuit. The park is far from the northern circuit, so you either fly in to an airstrip such as Msembe or Jongomero, or drive by road via Iringa. Many safari offers are built around one of those two ways in. Compare the offers by what the price covers, not only by the number of days.

Our picks: Ruaha game-drive safaris
One night in park bandas fits a short trip, two nights from Iringa or Morogoro give more time on the tracks. Only the Morogoro trip lists park and conservation fees as included, so ask about fees on the other two.
Hand-picked tours, booked through GetYourGuide. Prices are indicative starting prices in US dollars (as of October 2026). Tap a tour for live availability and the current price in your currency.

What a day on safari looks like
The rhythm follows the animals and the heat.
Morning drive
Predators are best watched in the morning and the evening near the river courses. The park is known for large lion prides, so lions are a common goal, but a sighting is never promised.
Midday at camp
The middle of the day is for rest, food and shade. Bring drinking water and insect protection on every drive.
Afternoon drive
The second drive heads out again toward water. In the dry season the sand river seeps and the last pools draw animals, and that shapes where guides take you.
Back before the gate closes
The gates close at 6 p.m. Night drives and drones need a special permit, so do not expect either on a standard package.
If you want to leave the vehicle, read the page on the Ruaha walking safari. For the animals themselves, see the guides to the lions, the wild dogs and the greater kudu and other wildlife.
What to budget for
Ruaha prices are built from separate items. Ask any operator to list each one.
| Cost item | 2023/24 tariff | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Park conservation fee, adult (16 and over) | $30 per day | The rate TANAPA applies may be $70 per adult instead |
| Park conservation fee, child (5 to 15) | $10 per day | Children under 5 are free; $20 where the higher rate applies |
| Vehicle, commercial, up to 2,000 kg | $40 | $150 for 2,001 to 3,000 kg; open vehicles pay a 50 percent surcharge |
| Visit period | 12 daylight hours (day trip) or 24 hours (sleep-over) | Entry is valid for multiple entries in that period |
| Accommodation, transfers, flights | Set by the operator | Ask whether park fees are included in the quote |
These are the 2023/24 tariff amounts, shown without the 18 percent VAT that may be added. International adults pay $30 or $70 per person depending on the rate TANAPA applies, and a quote may or may not include VAT. Check the current amount before you book, and ask whether the safari price covers it. Visitors pay by Visa or Mastercard at the gate, by mobile money, or online; operators can also pay by bank transfer. The page on Ruaha park fees goes through the rates in more detail.
For most visitors, the clearest quote is one that names park fees, vehicle and guide, accommodation and transfers as separate lines. A single package price with no breakdown makes comparison hard.
Tanzania safari: where Ruaha fits
A first trip to Tanzania often starts in the north. Ruaha is the other direction.
The northern parks form the classic route out of Arusha. If that is what you want, see the guides to a Serengeti safari or to a safari in Tarangire. Ruaha sits in the south, so it suits a longer trip or a second visit. You can also join it to other southern parks, as the page on the southern circuit explains.
Rain changes a safari here. The wet season runs from late November to May, with muddy tracks and rising rivers, and June to October are the busiest months. Book early for those months. The weather page has the season in detail.

Ruaha safari: frequently asked questions
How many days do I need for a Ruaha safari?
There is no fixed answer. The park is large and reaching it takes time, whether by air or by road, so a stay of several nights is more rewarding than a quick visit. Ask each operator how many game drives the plan includes.
Is a Ruaha safari possible by road?
Yes. The drive from Iringa takes roughly 2 to 3.5 hours depending on the track, and a 4x4 is recommended, especially in the rain. Flying to Msembe or Jongomero is the other common way in.
Will I see lions?
The park is known for large prides, but no guide can promise a sighting. Treat lions as a good chance, not a guarantee, and plan enough drives.
What do I need to enter Tanzania?
Most visitors apply for an eVisa before travel; check the rules for your nationality. Since October 2026 the state-required travel insurance also applies on the mainland and costs $44 for stays up to 92 days.
Is this the official Ruaha website?
No. This is an independent guide. It is not run by Tanzania National Parks or by any safari operator, airline or lodge.
