Where to stay in Ruaha National Park
The park offers three kinds of stay. Public and special campsites are for people who camp with their own gear. Simple bandas and rest houses are run in the park itself. Private camps and lodges sit in areas such as Jongomero and are usually booked as part of a safari.
Because the park is large, where you sleep decides how you spend your time. A base close to the river saves driving, and a base far from the gate means a long first day. Most guests choose a camp together with a safari, and our Ruaha safari page shows how that works. The park is open all year, and June to October are the busiest months, so book early.

Ruaha camps and lodges compared
What each type is like and who it suits.
| Type | What it is | Booking | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public campsite | A basic camping area in the park | Check the current rules before you travel | Self-sufficient campers |
| Special campsite | A camping site with its own, higher rate | Book in advance | Small groups who want more privacy |
| Park bandas and rest house | Simple rooms run by the park | Book in advance | Budget travelers |
| Private camp or lodge | A tented camp or lodge in an area such as Jongomero | Usually in a safari package | Travelers who want full service |
| Stay outside the park | Places along the access road | Directly with the host | Overland trips and an early start |
For most first-time visitors, a private camp inside the park booked with a safari is the simplest choice. Campsites and bandas suit people who are used to organizing their own food and water.

Choosing a camp
Questions to ask before you book.
Where is the camp?
Ask which area of the park it sits in and how long the drive to the river is. Some areas, such as Jongomero, have their own airstrip, which can shorten the way in. See getting there.
What is included?
Check meals, drinks, game drives, transfers and park fees. Rates differ by what is in the price.
When does it open?
Some camps close for part of the year. Ask about the dates before you plan. The park itself is open all year.
Is walking offered?
A guided walk needs a ranger and a licensed operator. If you want one, ask early. See the walking safari guide.
Staying outside the park
Some places to stay lie outside the park boundary. You then drive to the gate each day, so leave in time to be back before 18:00. The Iringa guide covers a night in town.
